the price you pay
I remember listening to this song when I was a teenager and it was one of my all-time favourite Bruce songs. In all the years that I have been seeing him in concert I never got to hear him play it live. A shame because it a song that resonates very deeply with me throughout my life, and especially tonight. It picks up the theme of 'Prove it all Night' that if dreams came true that would be nice but actually in the real world the pursuit of happiness carries with it a price. When I was young trying to imagine the life I wanted I always knew it would come with a price. The more outlandish the dream, the greater the price that would be demanded. In love especially this was true. To want to do anything out of the ordinary carried risks. I did not know if I had what it took to chase those impossible dreams back then but even then I remember reading the lyrics of the song and they sounded like a person who had left behind some of their youthful optimism and instead had reconciled themselves to harder truths. Truths that suggested that nothing comes for free and to achieve great happiness can demand great pain and sacrifice and the strength, determination and faith to live with the price you pay.

Safia, I hope you don’t mind me asking why you have asked that question and only give two options? I’m new to this blog so maybe you know something I don’t know but it seems to me there are more options e.g not marrying, partnering/marrying a theist that you have not mentioned or even an atheist. It also seems to be a bit of a non-sequitur.

Springsteen- wow
This song-wow
Your comments- wow
Truer words were never spoken. Your’re a great writer Sarfraz. Keep up the good work.
