haiku lit crit

I just came across a website features haikus about Luton… one of them is about me and it reads

‘Sarfraz Manzoor writes / About Springsteen and Luton / Every time he writes’

I should be grateful there wasn’t enough syllables to add in ‘Muslims’ to the list..

i DO try to write about other stuff, and I succeed sometimes better than others, in truth I don’t write about Springsteen or Luton too often but I do seem to write about national identity and Muslim/Asian stuff a fair bit. even when I don’t think I am it emerges as a theme in the writing. I guess partly thats just because I am interested in it, also you get known for certain areas and then editors are more keen for you to play to your perceived strengths.. it is something I am aware of- walking the tightrope of having some areas of specialism and yet not being imprisoned by them.. i think all journalists/writers facce these questions and we all do our best to overcome the labels that are imposed by others and by ourselves. How well I succeed isn’t a question I am qualified to answer.

you can read the other haikus on
